Successful Career Planning Four years or (maybe more) process
Freshman Year - Entrance
• Participate in the First Year Experience Program • Develop and refine time management skills • Start researching majors/careers to focus your academic work • Get to know faculty, advisors and administrators • Set academic goals - grades are important • Take interest and personality inventories through the Counseling Center • Browse "What Can I Do With My Major"? • Join university organizations, and clubs that offer leadership roles in the future • Develop an initial resume and thus a professional portfolio • Improve interpersonal skills by meeting and networking with people • Start a career information file to keep track of contacts and activities over the next four years • Collect information on internships, cooperative (co-op) education opportunities, summer jobs and volunteer position
Sophomore Year - Engage
• Enroll in Life & Career Planning/College Success courses • Explore and research specific careers • Continue to be active in extracurricular activities • Discuss career questions with Career Consultants • Identify organizations and associations in your interest areas for mentoring /job shadowing through the Professional Network Program • Develop good work ethic - learn to work with others • Participate in internships, co-op and/or volunteering • Connect with the Student Life Office
Junior Year - Experience
• Develop leadership skills • Research career options in relation to your interests, skills, values, and goals • Continue to network and seek contact with peers, faculty, and professionals within your field • Participate in internships or related work experience • Learn how to conduct a well-planned job search • Make career choices involving employment or graduate school • Build professional wardrobe and portfolio • Conduct information interviews and attend mock interviews • Attend Career Center sponsored signature events - Volunteer Fair, Careers Expo, and the Teacher Recruitment Fair
Senior Year - Exit
• Review your graduation plan with academic advisor • Polish your job search skills • Maintain contacts with faculty, advisor, and administrators • Attend job fairs and job search seminars • Join a professional organization • Update resume and submit for review • Send resumes and inquiry letters to targeted employers • Follow-up on job vacancy announcements • Keep track of your interview results and assess your performance after each interview • Participate in on-campus and off-campus interviews • Gather information on realistic salary expectations • Make career decisions and prepare for employment • Submit application for graduation • Accept the job that best fits your career and professional needs
